Mindset “Training”  Part 1

This months blog, I am choosing to dabble into the mental aspects of Powerlifting. I feel this to be very important so I will be addressing it over the next 3 blogs. Instead of it being a monthly blog, I will address each area every week for 3 weeks. Then return to a goal of a monthly blog.

The first entry will be addressing the mindset needed and utilized in preparing for a meet, the training aspect.

My opinion, you cannot create a championship mindset on meet day. You will reveal on meet day, the one you have built through months of training.

Concepts like training with purpose, visualization of successful sets in your head, gaining confidence from working through hard sets and workouts, brining intensity into your workouts and having the ability to shut the intensity off at the right time will be very important in your ability to grow a proper mindset pushing towards the meet.

I always found that treating heavy sets, like attempts performed in a meet was a valuable tool towards tightening up my head, in regards to controlling my emotions, focusing and ultimately setting training PR’s.

The ability to “learn” how to flip the switch will be quite valuable come meet day prep and competition performance. This is practiced and confidence is built on this during training.

Training is the grind that allows you to perform at your best on meet day. Lots of missed attempts, inability to properly visualize or minimize distractions while completing sets will all destroy confidence. Leading to a poor performance meet day.

I have over 30 years of competition experience in powerlifting, and one thing I hear often is successful athletes are simply more intense. False, In my opinion, the best lifters I’ve competed  with knew exactly when to turn up the intensity and ultimately when to turn it off..

Come back in a week and we will discuss the second important concept of a proper mindset, getting your head ready for what is needed on meet day!
